Photography represents
an amalgam of science and art. Creative applications of imaging technology
give us new views of
nature. This site combines the technical aspects of photography with the joys of visual
arts and discovery. In order to pursue a career in
science that would bring me into contact with the nature, I studied meteorology and oceanography at
M.I.T. and received a graduate degree 1970. I am a professor
at the University of
Colorado where our group performs laboratory and theoretical research on
the fluid dynamics of
atmospheric and planetary circulations. I teach courses in weather science and
oceanography. Our research projects
are described in the scientific
literature, and contain many examples of
the use photographic flow visualization methods to unravel the complexities of
geophysical turbulence. The CrystalCanyons
website was developed to share various adventures and techniques in
scientific and nature photography with students of the outdoors,
with anyone who might want to try a new photographic method, as well as
with those who just appreciate the photographic art-form.
I am most grateful to my son,
Davis Hart, for doing all the graphic design and programming on this site when he was a sophomore at Grinnell College. His
formulation and implementation of the database-driven server-side 3D
formatter is a first, and quite an accomplishment.
Thanks for visiting.
