WATERHOLES CANYON To visit Waterholes Canyon, which is 6 miles on AZ 89 south of Page, you need to obtain a hiking permit from the Chapter House in LeChee, or at the Navajo Parks and Rec Office about three miles south of Page on Coppermine Road. I have been both up the canyon from the bridge and down a ways. The lower part becomes seriously technical, and travel there is locally frowned on because of one death and several rescues of unprepared inexperienced hikers attempting the lower slot. A walk down the rim above the lower section is worth it for the views west to the Vermillion cliffs. The upper part is beautiful and should satisfy most photographers' needs. You can hike all the way up to the head of the canyon, which is about three kilometers past the power lines, but this will require several exits and re-entrys to work around dryfalls. Plan a whole day to do this. If it's real hot you may suffer a bit in the open sections. Take plenty of water and a huge hat. Photography here is similar to that in the Antelope Canyons. A tripod is a must for the rock sculptures. Ref. Kelsey, " Canyon Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau", Kelsey Publishing, 1999.
