JACKALS and WILD DOG Jackals are secretive and shy. The only ones I have been able to photograph have been at or near a kill (which serves as a magnet), or drinking at a waterhole. They are common throughout Africa and can often be seen on the prowl, but they zip around quickly and won't usually stop for the camera. If you are lucky a local guide may know the location of a den. Wild Dogs are rare now, having been hunted out or killed by distemper. My best luck photographing them was in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, and in the Okavango Swamp (PomPom Camp and Kings Pool). But the dogs migrate around and may or may not be at these places. Botswana, however, still has a fairly robust population.
