HOOVES ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

Compared with Africa, where waterholes focus activity and photographic opportunity, N. American ungulates are more isolated and rarely do you find more than one or two species congregating together.  Large numbers of a specific animal often come to salt licks, but unfortunately the backgrounds at such places usually are a bit problematic.  So you just have to hike and be a bit lucky.  Some places I've had success at include:

Dall Sheep:  Igloo Mountain, Denali NP

BigHorns:  Outside Gardiner Montana (late fall),  Washburn Mountain, Yellowstone.  Rocky Mountain Park (Specimen Mountain, Horseshoe Park), Mt. Evans (CO).

Mountain Goats:  Mt. Evans, Colorado,  Glacier National Park (esp. Gunsight Pass and Sperry Chalet area).

Elk:   Yellowstone, Jackson Wy. National Elk Refuge.

Moose:  Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Denali.
