CALF CREEK
Upper and Lower Calf Creek Falls are accessible by relatively easy hikes down from the hogback road and along Calf Creek, respectively. For photography it is probably best to get to either falls when they are either fully in the sun or fully in the shade. When sunlight directly hits the cascading water, but some of the other rocks are shaded, your film won't handle the extreme contrast and one or the other will be washed out. Late afternoon usually guarantees shade for lower Calf Creek, but the degree of "lateness" depends on the season. Keep a look out for rattlesnakes, especially on the lower trail (the upper trail is mostly on open slickrock). Take a tripod. Long exposures (1/2 to 2 seconds) nicely blur out the water flow, giving a softness to the image that emphasizes plants and colors in the rock. Such long exposures are often required in the shade if you wisely use a high f-stop to guarantee sufficient depth of field.
